“ARE YOU READY FOR CHRISTMAS?”
This is what small talk is this time of year. Everyone asking everyone else if they are “ready” for Christmas. Like we needed more pressure or more reminders that we aren’t finished with shopping or cards or cleaning or kids’ school party prep or Christmas program prep or that we haven’t been to the grocery store or taken a shower or OH MY GOD QUIT JUDGING ME.
Some of us are not really fans of the whole holiday season hustle. But how OH HOW do we escape it? Especially with every person we encounter reminding us just how NOT “ready” for Christmas we are?
You think, “Oh, I’ll just tell them how not ready I am and that will end it” – but no. That’s what they want to hear. Then it becomes a competition of just HOW “not ready” everyone is. What in the ever loving hell?
SO AM I SUPPOSED TO BE READY OR NOT READY? WHY ARE YOU ASKING TRICK QUESTIONS WHEN I AM SO CLEARLY STRESSING OUT OVER CHRISTMAS?
And then the Target cashier is all like, “OK… well… Can I interest you in our REDcard?” And I apologize and leave the store with a hat, two scarves, and a pair of shoes when all that was on my list was cheese and a hula hoop.
Holidays are tough, y’all.
