31 Days: What to Wear for Fitness

So you are working out and this is great news. I am proud of you and you should be proud of yourself – BUT… How do you look when you are doing it?

Even your fitness wear should be scrutinized when developing your personal style. If you feel good about the way you look, you are always going to feel better about whatever you’re doing. If you feel good when you are doing something, you’re probably going to continue to do it. So? It matters.

We can’t even begin talking about this until we discuss the thing we all have: yoga pants. Do we all do yoga? Probably not, but yoga pants are just the best. But if your stretchy staples don’t fit well or are falling apart, they really aren’t so amazing.

Consider these points: Do you have to keep hiking up your yoga pants because they keep sliding down? {You need a new pair.} When you wear them, do you look like you are preparing for a flood? {You need a new pair.} Are they black, yet I can still see what color your undergarments are? {You need a new pair.}

So, where to go? What to do? Here are a few pairs to consider:

spend or save on yoga pants?

What you choose to spend is totally up to you – there are good options at all price points. My personal experience has been that when I pay more for a garment, it performs better and lasts longer. This is important to me because I run or go to a group fitness class a few times a week, so I spend time in these clothes. For some of us our workout clothes can and do serve double duty, as they fit into our active lifestyle (read: chasing children) as well, so the value increases when you can wear it more.

The most important thing to know is that any of these pairs is a better choice than a pair that doesn’t fit you. Also please note that fitted activewear capri pants are flattering and absolutely an option.

I also encourage you to wear tops that fit when you work out. There are two reasons for this: 1) as we discussed a few posts ago, an old oversized t-shirt just looks like you don’t care; and 2) fitted workout clothing is going to help your body move better because there is no fabric to get in the way. This is especially true if you are going to a yoga class or a pilates class where the teacher needs to see if you are in alignment or turned the right way.

This doesn’t mean you have to go in just a sports bra and bike shorts. Here are a few ideas for you:

There are many easy options at every price point to replace old or ill fitting pseudo workout wear. “Getting dressed on purpose” means all the time – even when you are getting ready to sweat.
