31 Days: What Should You Be Wearing Right Now?

Trends – who can keep up with them? It’s such a mystery knowing what the kids are wearing these days…

Except for it’s not. It’s not at all. I can do it and you can do it, too.

Grab a current issue of a fashion mag or google it – the information is much more accessible than you might think. And it’s OK to care about it.

You don’t have to be über trendy, but wearing a little bit of something that’s currently on trend sends the message that you are here. You are paying attention. You care about how you look.

So what should you be wearing right now?

Here’s a mom-friendly rundown of what’s trending for Fall 2013:

1. Greens & Blues

Emerald green was given the title of “color of the year”, but cobalt blue is definitely the color for the fall. What this means for you is that you will see a lot of greens and blues in the stores right now. Wine/burgandy and Mustard will also be out there (the colors, not the food) as they are great compliments to this palette.

How to wear it:

On a budget or a spree, you can pick up some tops in these colors to pair with jeans you already own. Stein Mart, Target, Nordstrom’s, where ever you like to shop will work. If nothing else, grab an accessory in one of these colors. A black and white outfit with a cobalt blue scarf would be very chic, or add the pop of color with a necklace.

2. Animal Prints

Say what? Animal prints are still a thing? You betcha.

If you don’t have any animal prints in your wardrobe by now, it is time to take the plunge. No matter your fashion personality, this is a look anyone can incorporate into their closet.

How to wear it:

Accessories are the key if you are new to this trend. A bag, a belt, a bracelet, a scarf – any of these things are an easy (and safe) way to approach animal prints. Leopard or zebra prints are the most common right now, but a giraffe print is nice, too. Want to make a little bit more of a statement? Animal print flats are the way to go. You can do it. I promise.

3. Leather

Have you seen the episode of Friends where Ross wears the leather pants? That is an example of what not to do.

How to wear it:

The way to wear this trend on purpose is to look for top or dresses with leather accents, usually found on the shoulders or collar. A skinny pant with leather accents (on the knees or a stripe down the sides) will work, too.

4. Moto

What’s that you say? That’s not a word? It is now. Moto is a reference to “motorcycle” so dig out your biker jacket or biker boots if you have been hanging on to them.

How to wear it:

The moto trend is not just about leather, it’s about the style. Trending now are moto style coats in all fabrics and boots and bags with more buckles and zippers than necessary.

5. Patterns

Camo. Houndstooth. Floral. Plaids. You will see all of these things in the stores right now and it’s OK. These are not dated looks; these patterns are indeed trending.

How to wear it:

Of course I love a camo skinny jean, but that’s not for everyone. My fellow GenXers might want to resurrect their love of plaid this season with button down shirts or with skirts. Either way: it’s OK. You are right on trend.

(Also, it should be noted that when I wear a plaid shirt to see Pearl Jam in concert next month, I will be on trend and NOT pathetically trying to relive the 90’s.)
