Style Points: Kids School Shoes {UPDATED}

So the Big First Day of School at the Big Public School is now in the past at our house. My first grader picked out a new outfit and was quite pleased with her appearance on that first day.

But then… the Welcome Letter sent home by the teacher explained that the children are required to wear athletic shoes every day because they have PE every day. And my first grader was heartbroken because she could no longer wear her beloved silver flats to school… (The silver flats that I never let her wear to school anyway, but let her wear because it was the first day of school. Anyhoo.)

Now we need to find new shoes, as her only shoes that would qualify as “athletic shoes” are just about too small.

I don’t remember shopping for or choosing clothes or shoes when I was six. Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t, but I know we didn’t spend a lot of money on my clothes and shoes. But 30-something years ago there weren’t as many options for children. My goal now is to please my daughter’s fashion sense and my budget at the same time. I want her to feel good about what she’s wearing and most of her clothing choices don’t really “go” with athletic shoes. Kids get to be fashionable if they want to, too, right? So Saturday, we get to go shoe shopping — which would be a lot more exciting if it was for me…

I’m more a Chuck Taylor girl myself, but my daughter is very girly, so I think what we’ll try to find is something like this:

I found these online at Famous Footwear but I am hoping they have these at our Famous Footwear down the street. They have little things on the bottom of the shoe under the ball of the foot to make it easier to spin around. She’d totally be in to that.

I actually think these are super awesome, but that might just be my inner 1983 coming out:

And I’m not sure I could convince her to love them…

Why all the velcro? She insists they need to be velcro shoes. She can tie just fine, so I’m not sure what the deal is there, but it’s not really a battle worth picking.

I’m not really brand loyal at this point in my parenting life, though when I had only one child I did tend to stick to one brand. It was pricey, though, so I really need better options now. Do you have any go-to school shoes for your kiddos? How about a brand you love for kids? I’d love some advice from the more seasoned parents out there…

But I’m definitely going to lobby for Chucks.

So the results of shopping trip? Famous Footwear worked out well for us, though I was concerned at first because their stock of kids athletic shoes had been seriously diminished. But we found some worth trying on:

These Pumas are silver and glittery, so yeah, she liked them. But the price was a little higher than what I was going for. And they weren’t Chucks! So… I convinced her to try on another pair of shoes…
Boom.

And lo, and behold – she liked them! But she liked the other ones, too… What’s a mama to do? The Chucks were actually my preferred price point, too.

Well, it turns out they were having a “Buy One, Get One for Half Off” deal. So. We got both.
All’s well that ends well, right?

Comments

  1. Air Jordans. Always the right choice for six-year old girls ๐Ÿ™‚

Not a parent, but I was with a friend who has two girls and when the 7 year old tried on the shoe with the spinning thing, she said it wouldn’t be good to wear for running. Or walking. Just FYI. I like the orange/pink ones that you like(big surprise). All things old are new again… ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. OK – so one point Air Jordans, zero points spinny shoes, one point Pumas.

    Got it.
